Transition from School to College
Hello. If you like reading about other people’s thoughts on things and feel entertained when you can relate or when you realize how differently you feel, this is for you. Welcome to our blog!
The graph of the steady progression of our lives has been strained by many a change in the past few years. We encountered and avoided several crucial moments in our lives while the world was being wounded by the pandemic. Can’t speak for everyone, but I was truly oblivious of what was happening to those just a year ahead of me. Then again how could I have kept track of it when they themselves couldn’t. Meanwhile I was drowning in a pool of uncertainty with no help from Schools that gave no clarification about the 12th Board Exams, yeah remember those?
My days like most were spent attending classes from overly enthusiastic coaching classes, who knew nothing but to make use of out so called “free” time. When I got to college, one of the biggest differences I noticed was how much free time I had, and I mean real free time. I had nothing to do that was not obligatory. I’m sure that’s not the case for everyone who really took this opportunity to take their academics to another level, well, not me.
Living alone was not the biggest challenge. There’s not a lot to do when you’re only managing a singular lazy, low maintenance person like yourself. Not true, everyone is high maintenance when it comes to maintaining yourself. Well, you will have tonnes of complaints, be prepared. Try to be empathetic and realize the fact that you’re not living alone, you’re just living with yourself now. Everything else is chill.
College for me was just like school, familiar. Going to class at 8 am, definitely being home before 4. Then my friends and I would bond over what a mundane life we were living. That’s a thing that was different than school. In school, we would talk hours about our exciting lives outside the school and what we would do once we’re out. Planning about meeting your other friends not from school and the horror of seeing your teachers in malls, feels like something I’ve never done now that I see them always around and the only friends I have are from class.
Was making friends so different than you imagined too? In school, you would know every single one of the forty people in your class so it wouldn’t be hard to speak or go up to them. Here? I see new faces every day and there’s only 8 faces familiar to me. Sometimes, those eight faces are the only ones I’m looking for in the crowd so I don’t feel overwhelmed, but don’t tell them that because my friends WILL gloat.
Another mistake that I made was not making any online friends. I just didn’t see the point, I just assumed I would find my crowd once it was offline, but many already found them? From what I’ve seen its from sticking together for survival. When you’re in school, EVERYONE is new so everyone tries to get along, no one is reluctant to making new friends so you fall in pretty easily. Hah, not here. For the first week I would see some people always gathered together, ready to enjoy their “youth” at VIT. Felt so left out. Why didn’t I at least find one friend online? But don’t fret, soon, you find those just like you and all is well. Some of them do seem unapproachable, but really, they’re not. There are always new relationships to explore. Don’t be shy to go up to anyone. On your first day I mean, because it’s been 2 months and now its going to be weird. Kidding, sort of.
Anyways, another thing I realized was setting boundaries. Not everyone is on the same track. Our timings, teachers and calibers are all very different. Do what is best for you. And don’t be lazy, like me. PSA. Don’t worry about your appearance either, college will humble you. That’s what I love about a crowd, the spectrum of diversity is so huge, you will fit right in. Eventually. Mostly. I hope so.
